Little Nmachi Ihegboro has stumped the genetics experts.  The father, Ben Ihegboro, 44, a customer service rep says, "We both just sat there after the birth staring at her."

The mom, Angela Ihegboro, 35, simply said, "She's beautiful - a miracle baby."

Of course, Ben's first question after the birth wasn't completely unexpected, "Is she MINE?"

It's not entirely uncommon for white genes to skip several generation, which may explain the baby's appearance as neither parent has any mixed race genes that they are aware of.

Ben emphasized, "My wife is true to me. Even if she hadn't been, the baby still wouldn't look like that.  We both just sat there after the birth staring at her for ages - not saying anything."

Professor Bryan Sykes, head of Human Genetics at Oxford University, says this birth is "extraordinary".

"In mixed race humans, the lighter variant of skin tone may come out in a child - and this can sometimes be startlingly different to the skin of the parents.  This might be the case where there is a lot of genetic mixing, as in Afro-Caribbean populations. But in Nigeria there is little mixing."

He says that some unknown mutation is most likely at work in this case.

This isn't the first time Britain has seen a race mystery when it comes to childbirth.  Nmachi's unusual entry into the world comes five years after Kylie Hodgson gave birth to twin daughters, one white and one black, in Nottingham.

Kylie and her partner, Remi Horder, are both mixed race.

Even given that fact, the odds were estimated at a million to one.
