The rap artiste, popularly known as Ikechukwu, was born Ikechukwu Ugonna
Onunaku in Manassas , Virginia , USA to Nigerian parents but was flown back home
to Nigeria before his first birthday.
In his first and formative years, he took to dancing, acting and other entertaining
activities. His first contact with music of the likes of Marvin Gaye and the Jacksons
which shaped his taste was in the vast collection of vinyl kept by his father and this
was peppered by the heavy influx of hip-hop from the EP “the show” by Doug fresh
with ladi dadi on the bonus, IKECHUKWU started working on his first rhyme and
became the regular beat boxerand reggae, which inspired the young Ikechukwu to
work on his first rhyme. Hip hop became a culture and he took to beat boxing and all
other aspects of the fast growing hip hop culture.
By 1992 and like his siblings before him, it was off to the US for a college education,
initially to study Medicine, obviously to satisfy his parents, Ikechukwu got shipped to
Ohio but here, his musical training began. Ikechukwu took his love for music further
when he stayed found his way to the streets of New York . He collaborated with
music squads like CO-ED, P.G.A. (PIMPS, GORILLAS AND APES), TEAM
ROCKET WITH ARCHIBAL LEACH AND NO-NAMES, AND BIG BUSINESS
WITH DUSTY FROM DYCKMAN. After opening shows for Dela-Soul and common
in 2000 and steadily doing shows in New York , New Jersey and Maryland at spots
like kilimanjaro in New York, Izzy, Nuyorican, Soul café, Speed and Mirage now
known as Club Exit, Ikechukwu knew the time was right for a solo album. Battling
everyone he could meet, he built a name for himself in the local area but this wasn’t
enough for his kind of chanting and rhyming, he proved his versatility and was ready
for a deal. Signed to Coal City, an independent record label in collaboration with
Island Records, IKECHUKWU started work on his first album but due to
mismanagement and difference of views, it was all to no avail.
For this he came back to his fatherland, after an invitation from Obi Asika, Storm
Records, label boss, who had heard a track he did while in the states. His debut effort,
“Son of the soil” was a resounding success and a wake up call to the budding hip hop
scene in Nigeria. The multi talented artiste has racked up various kinds of training and
experience in his life from university in the United States to exposure to the corporate
world working on Wall Street, from bartending at the finest bars and restaurants in
New York City to promoting at some of the elite clubs. These experiences from his
youth were brought to play in the album which takes the listener through the story of
a survivor and one who know s where he is going and how to get there.
Ikechukwu is also accomplished in the martial arts with training in shotokan karate
from the age of 6 to studying aikido, taekwondo and even tai chi. An avid athlete,
Ikechukwu has always been involved in some form of athletics or physical fitness. An
actor and C.E.O. of his own production house, world famous Academy, Ikechukwu is
in fact the universal soldier, and proved it in 2006 when he took Nigeria by storm with
the collaborations with dare, escalade part.2 and Fuji, and ultimately with his debut
single, “my name is”with which he raised and has continued to raise the bar on the
Nigerian entertainment scene.
Following up with strong singles such as Legal Representah and Naija boy, and being
Nominated for best new artist at the channel o music video awards, Ikechukwu not
only proved he wasn’t a one hit wonder but that he was here to change the face of
Nigerian music and take the Nigerian music scene to a global level, after all he is
international killz. This brother has distinguished himself in other areas of
entertainment like modeling and production and boosted his international profile
when he went on the road through Europe, touching places like Vienna Austria ,
Munich Germany , and Bratislava Slovakia .
Ikechukwu also shows he is business savvy in his dealings with brands, helping them
build platforms to reach target markets or promote new products. A classic example
the case of hennessy, were he hosted a club tour across Lagos city but also put
together and hosted a weekly radio show on 96.9cool fm for thirteen weeks giving the
brand unbelievable mileage.
He teams up with long time friend Naeto c and brother uzikwendu as the world
famous akademy which has a mix tape currently on sale, featuring heavy singles like
“ín my mind” and “show love” which are on various charts around the country.
Ikechukwu (meaning power of GOD) is finally in that space where he has ached to be
for years. “That space where everything you are involved with is good as gold and it’s
the beginning of all things great because you are making decisions your creative
space isn’t cramped”. Now making movies and recording new material for his
sophomore album, Ikechukwu is geared to expose the richness of talent from Nigeria
to the rest of the world. Get ready for a feel of that power!
