Budding nolloywood actress Theresa Edem: How Royal Arts Academy helped launched my acting career

Budding actress Theresa Edem Isemin, best known for her roles in Ayamma: Music in the Forest, Hotel Majestic and Tinsel, talks about career, experience on the set of the new movie ‘Stormy Hearts’, her AMAA nomination, among other issues. TONY OKUYEME spoke with her

How did you start as an actress?

It all began at the drama club in my primary school, from there to acting in church and from there to taking up acting as a career. I moved to Lagos from Akwa Ibom to attend Royal Arts Academy and everything else is history.

What or who influenced you into acting?

I have always loved the arts and as a child I did I lot of reenacting, reenacting books and films both Nollywood and Hollywood films I had seen. This is how the acting seed was planted and over the years it has kept on growing and is now bearing fruits.

What has your experience been like so far in the industry?

My experience so far has been full of highs and lows but now my career is doing great; I can’t complain. God has been good. So far, 2017 has been a good year, I have done some great work this year and one of them being ‘Stormy Hearts’ is out June 2nd and of course my AMAA nomination has made my first half of the year super amazing. God has been good to me.

How have you been coping with fame, given the challenges it naturally brings?

Stardom is hectic as your life is open to scrutiny by any and every one, but I manage to stay grounded, thanks to my amazing family.

How would you describe yourself?

I am simple but extraordinary, a God lover, passionate and driven.

What is your advice to young and upcoming artistes?

Your dreams are valid, stay strong and don’t quit on yourself. Always add value and value will come back to you.

What does your nomination for AMAA mean to you?

My AMAA nomination means a lot to me. It means that dreams do come true, it means international recognition and it also encourages me to keep at it.

Share your experience on the set of Stormy Hearts.

‘Stormy Heart’ is an amazing film and I absolutely enjoyed being a part of it. We worked as a team, each department giving it their all; everyone understood that to make a great film we all have to work together.

Stormy Hearts is really good script, and my character Kachi, is a music artist that is willing to do whatever it takes to get to the top of her career. It was great working with the crew and cast of ‘Stormy Hearts’; we all bonded really well. The bonds helped me to relax and enjoy the shoot. Oh in Stormy Hearts I got to sing, hopefully my singing makes it to the final cut.

So I would say watch out for my singing and a possible singing career and the far future. (laughs)

How do you relax or unwind? Why?

That’s easy; I watch films with hubby, cook, and read books.

Who are your role models?

My role models are Jesus, Dr. Mrs Roberta Edem, Chief Mrs Imo Isemin, Liz Benson, Meryl Streep, to name a few…
