Xenophobic attacks: Nigeria House of Reps to send delegation to South Africa


In a bid to address the increasing spate of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, the Nigeria House of Reps have agreed to send a delegation to South Africa to speak with the relevant authorities.

The House of Representatives delegation will be led by the House Majority Leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

Others in the delegation include Committee on Foreign Relations, Hon. Nnena Ukeje, Hon. Sadiq Ibrahim, Hon. Henry Nwawuba, Hon. Nasiru Zango-Daura and Hon. Shehu Aliyu-Musa.

The moves is expected to put an end to xenophobic inhuman act.

Chairman of the House committee on Diaspora Hon. Rita Oji in a motion under matters of urgent national importance noted that some Nigerian homes and businesses operating in South Africa had been set ablaze in the last 10days for no just reason.

Orji said Nigerians accused of prostitution and drug abuse were being killed without trial while the Police look away.

She observed that Nigerians and their businesses in South Africa were attacked in May and in June, 2016 and nobody has been prosecuted till date.

According to her, the re-occurrence of xenophobic acts could make Nigerians living in South Africa, defend themselves and emanate to reprisal attacks.

The lawmaker said plans were ongoing to carry out another protest against Nigerians on Friday, 23, 2017 in South Africa.

“Industrious Nigerians were being accused of taking over businesses in South Africa while their own businesses strive freely here,” she said.

‎The member representing Gwer East/ Gwer West Federal. Constituency of Benue State Mark Gbillah, in his remark said the Minister of Foreign Affairs should issue a marching order to the South African Ambassador to Nigeria to stop South Africans from the proposed protest against Nigerians scheduled to hold on Friday.

He added that should the protest hold and Nigerians are killed or businesses destroyed, serious actions should be taken against the government of South Africa.

Gbillah stated further that the house should consider recalling Nigeria’s Ambassador to South Africa and advised Nigerians to stop travelling to South Africa.

He said a clear message should be sent to the South Africans as well as South African businesses operating in Nigeria.

Nigerians in South Africa being attacked

Member representing Esan North-East/Esan South- East of Edo state, Sergius Ogun , in his contribution stressed the need for the new South Africans to be educated on the role Nigeria played during the apartheid.

According to him, it appears that the new Pharoah does not know Joseph and Nigeria as the Giant of Africa must protect her citizens.

Ogun said it was necessary for Nigerian Government to create an enabling environment in the country that would attract Nigerians to do their business.
